Crate Training & Potty Training

" Crate training is NEVER to be used for punishment

Important Facts

" Puppies from birth to about 4 months old CANNOT control their elimination for too long.
" If training is done religiously the process should only take about 2 weeks regardless of age even shelter or rescue dogs need to learn to follow a new routine.

Keys to remember:

" Never use crates for punishment
" Make using a crate a positive experience
" Always show PATIENCE
" Practice, Practice
" NEVER leave a collar on your pet when it is in the cage.

Remember if the puppy or dog does anything like:
- Eat your favorite shoe
- Has an accident in the house

Take the newspaper and whack YOURSELF in the head very hard several times. In other words, it is your fault not the puppies. The behaviors are learned from a lack of time from you.

A CRATE SHOULD BE PURCHSED FOR THE PUPPY TO GROW INTO.
So it may be too big for it now. Section a portion of the crate off with a box to keep the pup on one side. (Pups don't like to soil where they sleep). Make sure your puppy always has room to sit and lay down comfortably. Extend the room as your puppy grows.

NEVER leave your puppy or dog in cramped areas. Man a well meaning person have injured their pets by not allowing them to have enough room in their crates.

BE SMART NOT SORRY. KEEP FRESH WATER IN THE CRATE.

NEVER KEEP YOUR DOG IN THE CRATE FOR MORE THAN 4 HOURS

Repetition Is Necessary

The puppy will not understand what you want unless you repeatedly show him/her the desired behavior many times.

Keep in mind also that your puppy does not know what is expected. You must show the proper place to eliminate and when.

Your best potty training friend is your crate. When you cannot watch your puppy put him in a crate. Think of the crate the same way you would think of a playpen for a baby.

Make crate training fun for the puppy. If you make it a POSITIVE event it will work well for both of you.

A DEN is an integral part of the wild dogs upbringing and safety zone. This applies to the "crate". Giving the puppy special "treats" is a great way to help him feel comfortable.

" DON'T crate only when you are leaving the house. Put the puppy in the crate while you are home as well. Us it as a "Safe" zone.

Crating when you are home and while you are gone, will instill comfort to your puppy in the crate and not worried that you will not return. This helps to eliminate separation anxiety later.

Make sure you read the instructions that come with the crate….
