Why Dogs Need To Chew

Puppies…

Puppies need something with resistance to chew on while their teeth and jaws are developing – for cutting the puppy teeth, to induce growth of the permanent teeth through the gums, to assure normal jaw development and to settle permanent teeth solidly in the jaws.

Teething – from age 3 months to about 10 months puppies are teething and relieve the discomfort by chewing.

Direct the puppy's chewing toward acceptable objects. A Nylon Bone is one you can use.

Adult Dogs …

Their desire to chew stems from the instinct for tooth cleaning effect, gum massage and jaw exercise – plus the need for an outlet for periodic doggie tensions and loneliness.

Chewing, Ripping, Shredding, Tearing Up and Generally Destroying…

Chewing should be expected for it is as normal for a dog as tail-wagging.

•  Provide your dog with his own toy and teach him to use them or he will destructively chew anything available.

•  DOGS …DO NOT...chew and destroy your house because they are..

Angry, Jealous, Spiteful, Malicious, Vindictive, or Petty.

They do it because they may be lonely, bored, frustrated, or anxious.

Active dogs can become restless when left alone for long periods of time. Dogs do not punish you for being late.

Fact: Dogs chewing is a form of occupational therapy to relieve stress and release energy.

If you come home and find that your dog has destroyed something,

DO NOT punish the dog.

Turn Destructive Chewing Into A Healthy Behavior

Positive Reinforcement

•  Dogs are capable of learning what is and what is not acceptable to chew.

•  Take time to teach your dog to play with her toys and to seek them out whenever she feels like chewing. Always lavish your dog with praise every time you see her play with or chew on one of her toys.

•  Give your dog a verbal warning if you catch her chewing on a forbidden item. Then immediately direct your dog to one of her own toys and praise her for chewing it.

•  COMMON SENSE…Put your shoes in the closet and shut the door. Place trash outside. Keep doors closed; keep valuables out of reach.
