Adoption
This Time It's For Keeps

Which is the correct answer to get a pet?

A. The kid's whining has finally worn you down.
B. You feel terrible for all the homeless pets in the shelter.
C. That purebred kitten or puppy in the pet store window is cute.
D. You've been thinking about welcoming an animal companion to your home for quite awhile. Then one day, every thing is right and your heart opens all the way and you know it's time.

D is the correct answer. It is crucially important to know the impact a new pet will have on your family, as well as, the type of animal, before you adopt.

Will your life and home accommodate a dog or cat?

DON'T act on impulse this is NOT a way to welcome a pet into your home.

DO your homework before deciding.

REMEMBER this pet will rely on you the rest of its life. They have already seen bad days.

Ask yourself????

" Do I have the patience and commitment to understand an animal's need and ways of communication?
" Do I have the patience and commitment to train my dog? Obedience classes are very important to the dog, you and your family.
" Is anyone allergic to animals?
" Am I willing to shoulder the majority of the care for this animal?
" Do I have the financial means to support a pet? (Medical care, food, grooming, toys, kitty liter, training and other supplies add up.)
" Do I have my yard fenced or have adequate protection for the dog when outside?
" Do I have permission if I rent? How about when I move will I be willing to seek a place that will take my pet? (Pet's are not disposable items. They form
attachments with you and your are their world).

PLEASE DO NOT GET A PET IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO TAKE THE PET WITH YOU. MOVING IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS THAT YOUR LOVED ANIMAL ENDS UP AT THE POUND. And know that 80% of the animals are destroyed because of lack of space not because they are not cute enough.
Remember this is a lifetime commitment.

" How will I take care of the pet when I am out of town? Will I seek motels that accept pets or leave it with someone else that is responsible?

What Kind of Pet Do You Prefer?

If you think you like a certain breed, read up on it before making a commitment. Don't go for the popular breed of the year. It could be TOTALLY WRONG for you and your family.

Often mutts or mixed breeds have a better, varied gene pool and sturdier constitution. Females are usually smaller than males. Kittens and puppies must be taught how to behave. An adult animal has already developed their personality and the adoption counselor is better able to match the animal to your family life-style.
